Before you ask me what “American 5 Star” is, let me explain.
There are nice hotels all over the world. However, in America, a hotel will say that their property is 5 stars when its really a 3.5 or 4 star hotel. For those of us who have traveled to nice parts in Asia (and some in Europe), the majority of 5 star hotels in America are VERY VERY DIFFERENT than a 5 star in Asia. I would argue that most “American 5 Stars” would be 4.5 stars in modern Asian countries.
That said (and before I get too sidetracked) The Four Seasons Hotel Miami is a great American 5 star hotel that I wouldn’t hesitate to stay at again. Izumi and I aren’t huge beach people (though we like water views in our rooms) so when we got an amazing deal to stay downtown, we jumped all over it.

How I Booked:
I wrote an entire article on how I booked this hotel which can be seen here:
Used the FS 3rd night free offer in conjunction w/my Citi Prestige 4th night free benefit. No Brainer.
At the time of check-in, we were offered to upgrade to a 1400 sq ft suite for an additional $100 a night. I had told him that I used the Four Season’s 3rd night free offer, and had also purchased using my Citi Prestige card (for 4th night free) and I wanted to confirm that I would only be paying the additional $100 a night for the first 2 nights (which he confirmed).
Great! We would now be staying in a 1 Bedroom Bayview Suite for an average of $239 a night!
After checking in, we went up the elevator to the 20th floor to check out the room. We noticed that in order to get to our suite, we had to go through another hallway leading up to the room (ALWAYS A GREAT SIGN THE ROOM IS AWESOME).
Annnnnnddddd we were right. The room was HUUUGE. Great views of the bay, separate sitting area, espresso machine (and the #1 for Izumi, a separate half bathroom in the living room).
Izumi is a huge fan of the FS beds, and it turns out you can actually buy the FS beds. Whenever I win the lottery, I promised we would buy a California King FS Bed to fit in our new Villa over looking Tuscany 🙂
Though we didn’t use it, there was a Lavazza coffee machine in the room.
Also did we mention the view? Had some really great views of the bay from both the living room and the bedroom.
Didn’t hear a single sound from any other part of the hotel while we were in the room. We both got a great nights rest!
Pool was great. As you walk toward the pool, they have a little area with sun lotion and water. There is always FS staff waiting there for you, and will make up your chairs before laying out in the sun.
Service around the pool was fantastic. Very attentive, and the food was fantastic.
They also had a bunch of tables and couches around the pool area.
Speaking of food, we ate lunch at Bahia (via the pool) and at Edge.
Bahia: We ordered ceviche and fish tacos…both were fantastic. If we didn’t fall in love my My Civiche (kind of like a Chipotle for Civiche) we would have eaten here at least few times during our stay.
Edge: Dinner at Edge was pretty good (but the steaks at PM Fish and Steakhouse were better…and its less then a 5 minute walk from the hotel) but Edge’s happy hour is fantastic!!! It’s buy one, get one apps, and they have $1 oysters!!! Izumi and I went there almost everyday before heading out to dinner.
Food at both of the hotel restaurants were good…but I guess not good enough for Izumi and I to take photos…here are some photos from PM Steak and Seafood.
It exceeded our expectations. For being incredibly reasonable, the hotel was great. If anyone is looking for a little get away (2hr direct flight from Washington, DC) I would highly recommend it.
Four Seasons just opened up another hotel in Miami called the Four Seasons Hotel at the Surf Club (which is right on the water). Next time we go to Florida I’m looking forward to checking that out.
